The traditional way

Simmered gently, poured slowly and shared — just as it has always been.

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a dallah or small pot.
  2. Stir in the Azkhaa, add a pinch of crushed cardamom if you like, and lower the heat.
  3. Simmer gently for about 5 minutes, then rest for a minute so the grounds settle.
  4. Pour slowly into small cups and serve with a few dates.

Tip: like it stronger? Add more powder rather than brewing longer, which keeps the cup smooth instead of bitter.

    How to brew

    Simmer 1 heaped teaspoon (about 5 g) per 150 ml of water for around 5 minutes, let it settle and pour. Or steep it in a French press for 4–5 minutes. See all brew methods.

    Storage

    Reseal the pouch after every use and keep it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Always use a dry spoon.

    What is date seed coffee?

    It's a coffee-style drink made from the roasted, ground seeds of dates. It brews dark and aromatic like coffee, but it contains no coffee beans at all, and no caffeine. In Arabic it's known as قهوة نوا التمر.

    Does Azkhaa contain any caffeine?

    No. Azkhaa is made only from date seeds, which are naturally caffeine-free, so you can enjoy it any time of the day or night.

    What does it taste like?

    Smooth and earthy, with notes of dark cocoa, toasted nuts and a gentle caramel sweetness. It's softer and less acidic than regular coffee.

    Is it instant? How do I brew it?

    It's a finely ground powder that you brew, much like traditional Arabic coffee. Simmer it in water for about 5 minutes, or steep it in a French press, then let the grounds settle or strain before drinking. See the brew guide.

    Can I add milk or sugar?

    Of course. It's delicious black, with dairy or plant milk, or sweetened with honey or date syrup.

    Is it suitable for everyone?

    Azkhaa is a single, natural ingredient with no caffeine. If you are pregnant, nursing or have a medical condition, please check with your doctor before adding anything new to your diet.

    How should I store it?

    Reseal the pouch tightly after each use and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Check the best-before date on the pack; once opened, it tastes best within a couple of months.
